Many times I have wondered about the whole aspect of conversation and whether or not people make distinctions between different conversation types: discussion, conversation, debate, simple chat, and so on. They all have their specific meanings with specific goals and depth of engagement. But do people know the differences between talking “to” someone and talking “at” someone? These two letter words can have a massive impact on your whole perception of talking with others. And a lot of it begins with who is the central focus of the spoken words.

The Five Languages of Love
How do you know when someone cares about you or loves you? How do you express your care or love for other people? What makes you feel like the people who care about you actually do?
“Love Language” is a delicate form of communication that can break or make any relationship. And it does not apply to just romantic or family love either – it applies to apologies and general workplace appreciation as well. But in the spirit of the month, I will focus on love. There are five types of love languages in total. We all have one which we likely prefer, though it is not uncommon to have more than one. Here they are.
These Laws Beg to be Broken
There are some laws that are good and helpful to society. Then there are laws that are unwanted and oppressive. And then there are those laws that kind of make you wonder…Why? Here are a few of them.
Juneau, Alaska: Owners of flamingos may not let their pets into barber shops.
Florida: It is an offense to shower naked.
Atlanta, Georgia: It is illegal to tie your giraffe to a telephone pole.
Living a Life Without Love
We all are familiar the different types of “love”: platonic, heterosexual, bisexual, homosexual, pansexual, etc. But many often exclude the possibility that being aromantic or asexual is one of them.
Love is everywhere. You grow up with it on television. You read about it in books. You start dreaming about it sometime in puberty. You hear about it every single day of your life. People who lack that desire are depicted as twisted or deprived: they’re either the villains bent on world destruction (like He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named) or someone who has not yet met that special someone (like Batman before Catwoman). People seem to forget that there ARE people in this world who have no desire to experience the “joys” of a relationship.
I am one of them.
Olin College is Bursting its Buttons
Once upon a time, one of Olin’s goals was to expand from a student body of 300 to a student body of 600. This was eventually dismissed, but Olin has not stopped growing in other ways—to the point where we are almost running out of space!
